Hi Larry,
It took some remembering on my part to find where to do this. First off, the image has to be stored on the web somewhere. I've always disliked the way boards do that, but I guess it's what we get for using a free service. What you'll want to do is set up something like a free dropbox account, and then plop the picture in the pictures folder. You should be able to link to it from there.
To get to the area where you type in the link to your profile picture, click "Profile" up at the top. Once you're there, choose the second header that reads, "Modify Profile". That should give you a space where you can manage your member preferences, including the profile pic.

Hi Kirby, I've tried as you described, the link is dl.dropbox.com/u/11548101/avatar.pngI make changes to my profile, and they take effect, just the custom avatar link does not save. Maybe there is a user setup the admin needs to turn on? Any thoughts? Larry

I think I figured it out - I deleted the "s" from the https on the dropbox link when I pasted it into the Avatar URL field. For whatever reason, Dropbox was forcing authentication with the secure site reference.
