Bill's latest class in Sold Hull ship modeling was just what I needed to get started again in the hobby. Most of my tools and kits had been packed away shortly after my first was born a could of years ago. So far, things are going well. At this point, the hull is shaped, and I'm about ready to fit and add the stem, keel, and sternpost. The rudder needs to be tapered, and the inside bulwarks need to be shaped and repaired. So far, I've really enjoyed the kit. This is mainly due to the fact that I have Bill and the helpful guys from the class to help me work on it! Attachments:

So the keel, sternpost, and stem are attached, and the hole is drilled for the rudder. I've got two fashion pieces on the side.
Really grateful for the help of the guys last Friday night at class. If you refer to the photo in my first post, there is a red rub rail around the hull. I was trying to figure out if they had painted the top edge of the wale plank, or whether I had run the fashion pieces too high. As it turns out, it's an additional 1/32" piece that runs on top of the wale, painted bright red.
So, even more fun things to add. The advantage to taking a course in Bill's shop is that he has the wood in stock to cope with these kind of surprises...

Ran into some major difficulty trying to read the "box top" in terms of painting! During one of the last solid Hull classes at Piel, several of us thought we had Katy's paint scheme figured out on the hull. The tricky part is that there's a rub rail above the wale, which is bright red. So far, so good. But then there's a dark green section, a black section, and a dark stain section, none of which show suitable relief detail. At the end of the day, it was anyone's guess as to the colour of the wale. I settled on black after some additional help from Bill, and we decided to skip trying to draw a waterline. As the model is pictured on the box, she is Ochre from the wale to the keel. Here she is, a few coats of paint in, but by no means finished... Attachments:

Just to update - I've got the decking on in the lower cockpit area, and on the main deck. Now to do the "rolltop desk" part around the tiller, and then add covering boards/waterways, stanchions, and rails. At that point, it's on to the adventures of deck furniture.
That is, once I'm done this ship-in-bottle with Alex's class. Like Bill's solid-hull class, I think I'm learn as much about the "oh, that's how a set of plans relates to 3-dimensional reality" as I do about finessing the model itself.

Just a quick update... I have the covering board on the port side! Progress. Also finishing up the counter planking in the cockpit, and then onto bulwarks and rails!
Bill's advice was to get the model secured to the base before doing the deck furniture, which sounds good to me.
